Leaving Scotland to its Fate

I am going to be leaving Scotland soon to live abroad so I will stop this blog here. I hope someone else will take up the torch.

Scotland is being islamised in the same way the rest of Europe has been islamised and the effects will be the same. The other countries of Europe that experienced this didn't know how it would turn out. It was a new phenomenon. They had no precedents to guide them. We don't have that excuse. All we have to do is look around the rest of the continent and see what a disaster third-world immigration, and most especially Muslim immigration, has been for the indigenous people of Europe.

In this light, the decision of Scotland's political elites to throw open the gates to mass third-world immigration amounts to criminal negligence and malfeasance in office.

England's two largest cities now have a majority of third-world origin pupils in their primary schools. The English have had their cities taken away from them. In 50 years, if current trends continue, it will be the same in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In the person of Humza Yousaf, Scotland now has a jihad operative at the heart of Scottish politics. His cousin Osama Saeed, who praised the now-deceased Jihad leader Anwar Al-Awlaki, was a former spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood front group, the Muslim Council of Britain. As directors of the Scottish Islamic Foundation, they plundered the Scottish exchequer together for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Yousaf has demonstrable connections to Muslim extremists. Under the auspices of the Scottish Islamic Foundation, he introduced a known jihadist, a Hamas operative described as a terrorist commander by both the BBC and the US State Department, to a Scottish government minister. Yousaf was present at the meeting. The document attesting to this is available on the Scottish government website.

Despite Yousaf's shadowy past, not a word of critique or even inquiry about it has been uttered by the collection of third-rate simpletons who pass for journalists in Scotland. These clowns still think Islam is a religion of peace and anyone who thinks otherwise must be an admirer of Adolf Hitler. Understanding will eventually dawn on them, as it eventually dawns on any people experiencing Muslim colonisation. But the sooner this understanding comes, the more damage can be averted. I hope some other blogger will take up the cause and act as watchman. Because, though no journalist or politician will say so, the enemy is now inside the gates.

Kriss Donald Killer Imran Shahid Loses Human Rights Bid

The leader of a gang jailed for the racist murder of a Glasgow schoolboy has lost a bid to win damages for being held in solitary confinement in prison.

Imran Shahid is serving a minimum of 25 years for murdering Kriss Donald in 2004.

He had raised an action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh claiming that his segregation violated his human rights.

But judge Lord Malcolm rejected this, agreeing that segregation was necessary for safety reasons.

Shahid was recently attacked in prison after being returned to the mainstream population.

The 34-year-old, his brother Zeeshan Shahid and Faisal Mushtaq were all sentenced to life in November 2006 after being found guilty of murdering the 15-year-old.

Kriss Donald was abducted in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, stabbed several times, then set on fire.

Substantial risk
During his time in the Scottish jail system, Shahid has spent four years and eight months in segregation.

He claimed this amounted to inhuman or degrading treatment and was contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

He also maintained that there had been interference with his right to respect for private life under the ECHR.

As part of the action he raised a claim for compensation of £6,000, although his counsel Simon Collins QC accepted that any damages award would be modest.

In his judgement Lord Malcolm said: "Given the nature of his crime there was a high level of feeling against him in the prison population.

"The relevant officials, charged with making decisions concerning his management, considered that he would be at substantial risk of serious harm if returned to the mainstream population.

"Given the information which they had, they would have been open to very serious criticism, and indeed legal action, had he been placed in mainstream and come to harm.

"While such a lengthy period of segregation is a cause for concern, its purpose was legitimate. It was directed towards the petitioner's own safety and protection from the potential for serious injury or worse."

Lord Malcolm added: "The response was proportionate. Throughout the ultimate goal of reintegration was maintained."

The SPS maintained that within the prison population there had been a high level of feeling against Shahid because of the murder and at the time the view was taken that to place him in with mainstream prisoners would leave him at serious risk of attack.

The Scottish government regularly granted applications to governors for the renewal of his segregation.

Scots Attacked by North Africans in Brussels Metro

Brussels and Marseilles are the two most islamised cities in Europe. Both are becoming increasingly dangerous for infidels.

Yesterday, flandersnews.be reported that there were a total of four violent incidents on the Brussels metro on Saturday evening. One of the incidents quoted was a fight involving a group of British tourists and North African youths. Having read yesterday's article, Mr Calum Sellars of Glasgow, Scotland has given us his account of Saturday evening’s incident on the platform of the Clemenceau metro station in Anderlecht.

Mr Sellars gives a very different account of events that those given in the media on Monday. Having been involved in Saturday’s incident, he searched the internet for reports of it.

He came across our report on flandersnews.be. The report was based on information from several sources including the press agency Belga and the Brussels regional news site brusselnieuws.be.

Nevertheless, Mr Sellars says that a number of key facts were missing.

“Firstly, the majority of our group were actually females (there were only 7-8 males in the group). Secondly, four of these females were seriously assaulted. One was hit with a glass bottle, the other with a brick and another was punched in the face. The fourth girl was rushed to hospital because a piece of glass had cut her eye and it was thought at one point that she would have to have surgery.”

Mr Sellars goes on to write that there were far more than ten North Africans involved and that he believes that the attack was planned.

“It was completely unprovoked and CCTV images will certainly confirm this. While our group tried to defend ourselves we were constantly bombarded with bricks and glass bottles.”

He also criticises the attitude of the police. “When the police arrived they were very unhelpful. They were disinterested in anything we had to say and failed to catch any of the attackers who stayed within the vicinity for some time after the incident.”

Scottish Newspapers' Dishonesty Revealed

Various newspapers have stories about David Livingstone's newly-revealed diaries today. The diaries tell of an incident in which Livingstone witnessed hundreds of negroes being massacred by Arabs. You can read a fuller account of this on my other site here.

From our perspective, though, the most important point is how political correctness has caused the Herald to omit key parts of the story. It quotes Livingstone's account of the massacre as follows:

The diary showed Livingstone was horrified by the massacre, as three Arab slavers with guns entered the market in Nyangwe, a Congolese village, where 1500 people were gathered, most of them women.

“Fifty yards off two guns were fired and a general flight took place ... shot after shot followed on the terrified fugitives ... great numbers died ... it is awful ... terrible, a dreadful world this,’ wrote Livingstone.

“As I write, shot after shot falls on the fugitives on the other side [of the river] who are wailing loudly over those they know are already slain ... Oh let thy kingdom come.”

The Times, though, offers us fuller extracts from the diaries, allowing us to see what the Herald chose to leave out.

Fearing that some of his own men had been responsible for 400 deaths that day, in the original version he wrote: “[S]hot after shot followed on the terrified fugitives — great numbers died — and a worthless Moslem asserted that all was done by the people of the English . . . It is awful — terrible.”

Within a year, he had written a new “official” account of the massacre: “Two wretched Moslems asserted ‘that the firing was done by the people of the English’. I asked one of them why he lied so and he could utter no excuse . . . he stood abashed before me and telling him not to tell palpable falsehoods left him gaping.”

So, just to be politically correct, the Herald chose to leave out the key part about Livingstone blaming the 'worthless Moslem' and 'wretched Moslems'. Shameful.

The Scotsman's account here could even be considered worse than the Herald's. It doesn't quote from the diaries at all. Nor does it mention that the perpetrators were Arabs. The natural inference of most readers would then be that they were Europeans. Thanks to unceasing propaganda, most people now believe that the slave trade was a uniquely European phenomenon. The fact that the Muslims had been operating a slave trade in Africa for almost 1000 years before the Europeans got involved is completely unknown to most people. And the Scotsman obviously wants it to stay that way.

People need to realise we are living in a Soviet-like media environment, one in which almost all mainstream sources display relentless and systematic dishonesty as they defend the multicult ideology of the ruling elite.

Scots Urged to Embrace Their Own Extinction

The propaganda for the European genocide is in full swing this week. As you can see from the graphic above, almost none of the net increase in the world's population from 6 to 7 billion came from Europe. Despite that, we are told that Scots need to have fewer children to make room for those with duskier complexions.

ONE of Scotland’s most eminent scientists has argued that couples in the UK should have no more than two children to help tackle the world’s soaring population.

Professor Sir Ian Wilmut puts forward his controversial views in today’s Scotsman as the number of people on the planet officially hits seven billion.

The professor of reproductive biology, most famous for his role in cloning Dolly the Sheep, argues that “population control is essential and beneficial even in countries like our own” because of the strain such a large number of people place on the planet’s resources.

He adds: “What is needed now is government promotion of the fact that having more than two children is imposing unacceptable demands upon the environment.”

...Writing an article called Population and consumption the twin determinants of our fate in The Scotsman today, Prof Wilmut said that even in the UK there are “obvious effects of human activity upon the rural environment”.

And he said although it would be “perverse” to remove the financial support that ensures children in the UK have a good start, there should be “social encouragement for those who choose not to have children or have only one child”.

...Prof Wilmut is the latest in a long line of well-known figures to promote the idea of having fewer children.

Broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough, environmentalist Jonathan Porrit, primatologist Jane Goodall, television presenter Chris Packham and former American vice-president Al Gore have all in the past sparked controversy by making similar comments.

First Minister Alex Salmond has said Scotland could offer attractive 'investment opportunities' to Gulf states
Scotland could offer attractive investment opportunities to its "friends in the Gulf", First Minister Alex Salmond has said.

Mr Salmond, on a five-day trip to Qatar and United Arab Emirates, will meet representatives from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority to discuss possible joint working between UAE and Scotland on infrastructure projects.

Scottish Enterprise chief executive Lena Wilson and other leading business figures will also be at the forthcoming meeting.

Speaking before it, Mr Salmond said leading figures in both Qatar and UAE had "expressed their confidence in Scotland's economic strategy".

The meeting with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government, is "an opportunity to talk in more detail about some of the unique opportunities Scotland can offer".

Mr Salmond went on: "Worldwide market forces make this an attractive time to invest in long-term, viable capital projects. I am confident that the Scottish Government's commitment to capital investment for long-term growth will make Scotland an attractive partner for our friends in the Gulf."

The talks come after the First Minister spent two days in Qatar where he discussed strengthening links with Scotland with Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, emir of Qatar, and Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al Thani, prime minister and foreign minister.

Mr Salmond said: "The economies of Qatar and the UAE continue to perform well as they seek to diversify. They share Scotland's commitment to sustainable capital investment which will secure the long-term future of our respective economies.

"In the current economic circumstances, capital investment must be a priority in both the public and private sector. Scotland offers many attractive business opportunities, particularly in renewables and infrastructure, which offer the prospects of good returns for substantial investors.

"Now is the time to invest, which is why I am visiting both Qatar and the UAE this week."

Pakistani Businessman Claims he Avoids Glasgow Airport

A BUSINESSMAN said he has stopped flying from Glasgow Airport because of the number of times he has been stopped and questioned by the police under powers designed to crack down on terrorism.

Mohammad Ashraf, chairman of wholesaler Bonanza, now flies from airports in England to avoid the “insult and embarrassment” of being pulled out of the queue and made to answer questions about his travel plans.

He said other members of the Asian business community had experienced similar “harassment” and were considering a similar boycott of the airport.

Police at Glasgow have come in for criticism for their use of Schedule Seven anti-terrorism powers, detailed in the Terrorism Act 2000, giving officers the right to stop and question airline passengers. It has been claimed officers use racial profiling when selecting people, overwhelmingly picking out travellers of Asian and Middle Eastern appearance.

Now Mr Ashraf has said he and his colleagues are fed up with being targeted and arrange to travel through airports where they are not singled out.

He said: “I’ve lost count of the times it has happened there, so I fly through Manchester or London when I have to travel internationally and I am never stopped at those airports.

“It’s hugely embarrassing and insulting when it happens. You are pulled to one side in front of everybody and asked all sorts of stupid and intrusive questions about where you have been and what you have been doing.”

Mr Ashraf, 51, was born in Pakistan and moved, aged two, to the UK with his family, describing himself as “bred in Scotland”.

He said passengers of European descent were not subject to the same scrutiny.

He added: “They ask all sorts of things about where I’ve been, what mosques I’ve been to and that kind of thing. Stuff that has no relevance to my business.

“There is no point in it. When my passport is scanned they should have my whole profile anyway, so there is no need for me to be constantly spoken to.”

During the summer, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill held a meeting in Glasgow with about 70 members of the Asian community to discuss their concerns about the way Schedule Seven powers were being used at travel hubs in Scotland.

He admitted there had been occasions when the powers had been used inappropriately, but said they were not deliberately used to target people because of their ethnicity.

But now members of his own party are questioning whether the police’s response is appropriate, with MSP Humza Yousaf calling for more effective targeting of the powers.

Mr Yousaf said: “The use of these powers at Glasgow Airport is clearly not intelligence-led, because the same people are being stopped time and time again. If people are being stopped eight or nine times then you would think something in the system would put an end to this.”

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said there were no formal complaints under investigation on the matter.

Assistant Chief Constable Colin McCashey added: “The threat from terrorism is very real. Schedule Seven of the Terrorism Act 2000 is a vital tool for tackling the threat.

“The service is constantly monitoring the manner in which these powers are utilised to ensure this vital work is conducted in a sensitive and professional manner that minimises undue distress to innocent members of the public.”

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: “Schedule Seven checks are a police matter and we therefore cannot comment.

“However, Glasgow Airport has worked, and continues to work, closely with various local ethnic minority groups to help highlight and explain the procedures involved in the security screening process.”

Scottish Population Boom Driven by Third-World Immigration

SCOTLAND’S population is expected to reach six million within 50 years, sparking fears of a looming crisis in housing, care and social services.

Campaigners warned that the Scottish Government had not done enough to plan for the future after statisticians revised their estimate of the number of people currently living in Scotland and said the country’s population might have hit its highest ever level this year, surpassing the previous record of 5.24 million set 37 years ago.

With a boom in the number of people coming into the country and an increase in births, it is predicted that the population, which stood at 5.22 million in 2010, will jump to 5.49 million in 2020 and six million by 2055.

Christmas Snubbed by Scottish Government

The Scottish Government has come under fire for completely failing to mention Christmas in its “Winter Festivals” programme.

In an official news release the Government mentions St Andrew’s Day eleven times, Hogmanay five times and Burns Night several times. But Christmas is not mentioned at all.

But Bashir Mann, a prominent figure in Glasgow’s Muslim community, has criticised the omission of Christmas, saying: “This is political correctness gone mad.

“Why should we be offended? Scotland’s religious population is 98 per cent Christian. Why should they not be allowed to celebrate their biggest religious festival?

“If my neighbour is celebrating Christmas, then I should join him. That’s what my religion tells me.”

And John Deighan, parliamentary officer for the Roman Catholic Church of Scotland, described the omission as “disappointing and hurtful”.

Season

A press release to promote the “Winter Festivals” reads: “The season of celebrations to mark Scotland’s distinct culture, unique heritage and creativity runs from St Andrew’s Day on November 30 through Hogmanay to Burns Season at the end of January and will bring together lovers of all things Scottish from across the globe.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Government said: “Christmas is a key celebration for families and communities.

“The Winter Festivals package includes events funded by the Scottish Government to help promote visitor attractions between St Andrew’s Day and Burns Night.”

Earlier this month the daughter of Thomas the Tank Engine’s creator criticised “political correctness against Christian belief” after references to Christmas were left out of an episode.

In the offending episode, entitled Keeping Up With James, the trains compete to deliver presents to children but Christmas has been rebranded as “the winter holidays”.

Last year it emerged that more than three million school diaries with no reference to Christmas or Easter had been issued by the EU Commission.

The diaries did make reference to Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Chinese festivities, as well as Europe Day.

Failed asylum seeker who has dodged deportation for a decade told he can stay... because he goes to the GYM

A failed asylum seeker who has dodged deportation from Britain for nearly a decade has been told he can stay – because he goes to the gym.

Amir Beheshti, 40, has been trying to get refugee status for seven years, but was repeatedly turned down by the courts, who ruled he would not suffer if he returned to his home country Iran.

But he has now told judges he has a private life that involves going for work-outs with his friends – which means his human rights would be violated if he was deported.

The controversial legal ruling by Scotland’s Court of Session means he will be allowed to continue living rent-free in his publicly funded flat and claiming a weekly allowance.

Earlier this month, a top Scottish judge issued a written decision in which he agreed the case should be referred back to Home Secretary Theresa May for fresh consideration.

This effectively means the threat of deportation has been removed and Beheshti is free to remain in Scotland indefinitely.

Lord Glennie’s judgment read: ‘He had integrated well within the Glasgow community, had a large network of friends, most of whom were Scottish, and socialised with those friends at the gymnasium, at five-a-side football, in coffee shops, at college, in the library and at their homes.

‘He went on to say that he made use of local facilities, such as the library and Glasgow leisure centres'.

Beheshti’s claim, it said, was ‘based on Article 8 ECHR and, in particular, on the fact that he had, so he claimed, established a private life in the UK.

Beheshti was smuggled into Dover on a lorry in 2005.

‘If the occasional trip to the gym is enough to allow a failed asylum seeker to appeal his deportation, then taxpayers will wonder who can’t claim a right to stay'

In his asylum application he claimed his father’s pro-Jewish sympathies put him in danger in Iran – but it was rejected, as were two appeals.

Having travelled to Glasgow, where he lived with his sister for two years, he appealed to the Court of Session.

But in June 2009, Lord Osborne ruled he had consistently failed to provide any ‘credible’ evidence that he would personally face any persecution or disadvantage in Iran.

The decision marked the end of Beheshti’s rights of appeal.

Technically, he should then have been removed as an illegal immigrant, but no action to deport him was taken.

In February 2010, Beheshti wrote to UKBA, asking for ‘leave to remain’ based on Article 8 ECHR. When that was rejected, he launched another appeal to the Court of Session. This appeal was the one that led to him being allowed to stay.

Beheshti said recently that he ‘feels comfortable’ in Glasgow and does not have anybody left back in Iran.

Last night, his case - which has already cost the public purse tens of thousands of pounds - sparked outrage.

Emma Boon of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: ‘If the occasional trip to the gym is enough to allow a failed asylum seeker to appeal his deportation, then taxpayers will wonder who can’t claim a right to stay.

‘He should have been deported when his case was initially rejected. It’s appalling that we are left picking up all of his bills when he should have been sent home years ago'.

A UK Border Agency (UKBA) spokesman said: ‘Too often, Article 8 [of the European Convention on Human Rights, guaranteeing the right to a private and family life] has been used to place the family rights of illegal migrants above the rights of the British public in seeing our immigration laws properly enforced, and that balance needs to be redressed.

‘The Government will change the immigration rules to reinforce the public interest in seeing those who have breached our immigration laws removed from this country.

‘We have been seeking to remove this individual, but we have been asked by the courts to look again at this case.

‘Where we do not believe someone has the right to stay in this country, we expect them to return home'.

Scotland's Many Faces

A CELEBRATION of how black people have enriched Scottish culture is being held at an East Lothian school as part of Black History Month.

Dubbed Scotland’s Many Faces, the event will include a photographic documentary, a talk by Sheila Asante, migration story curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and a performance by the Zawadi Alba Choir.

The event is being held today at Musselburgh Grammar School from 2pm.

Muslims Believe Black Magic Causes Mental Health Problems

Our old friend Humza reveals that many Muslims in Glasgow believe mental health problems are caused by black magic. It would be interesting to see some figures on the incidence of mental health problems in the Muslim population. There are strong statistical correlations between the practice of cousin marriage and various kinds of ill health.

A CITY politician has praised local mosques for taking the first step to combat difficult mental health issues in the community.

MSP Humza Yousaf said he secured agreement with a trio of Glasgow mosques that their imams would address the topic at Friday prayers last week, as part of Mental Health Week.
Within the Muslim community mental health problems can carry a heavy stigma, said Mr Yousaf, and the mosques requested they not be identified because it remains such a sensitive topic.

One in four people in Scotland will have a mental health problem at some point in their life, according to mental health charity SAMH.

Mr Yousaf said: “We all know the stigma surrounding those with a mental health issue in our society.

“However, the stigma related to those from within the black and minority ethnic (BME) community can be even worse.

“I’ve heard countless stories of families being completely ignorant of the different mental health conditions that exist.

“Many in the community turn to imams and elders instead of seeking proper medical advice.”

The SNP member added: “Many families believe that so-called ‘black magic’ or a perceived lack of faith is to blame, when the person suffering really needs medical attention.

“In addition, once diagnosed, many families decide to isolate the relative suffering due to concepts such as so-called ‘family honour’ and ‘shame’.

“I congratulate the imams and mosques who are taking this vital step in ridding stigma from our community.”

Shaykh Amer Jamil, an Islamic scholar and founder of the Solas Foundation in Glasgow, said: “Imams and religious scholars have an important role to play in tackling mental health stigma.”

The Glaswegian was unable to reach the mosques involved with Mr Yousaf for comment before going to press.

Scotland Becomes a Third-world Country

It is characteristic of third-world countries that there are severe restrictions on free speech. In particular, comments about religion often attract the wrath of the state. Here we have a guy being sent to prison for a few months for a few daft remarks about Catholics. Granted, they're not very nice, but any country that sends a person to prison for this has a warped sense of morality. And this is what they can do with the laws as they are now; if the proposed law on sectarian hate comes into effect, the penalties will be even more draconian.

A MAN who posted sectarian comments on a Facebook page about Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been given what is thought to be the toughest sentence for a football-related internet hate crime.

Stephen Birrell, 28, was jailed for eight months for posting a string of religious and racially-motivated comments on the social networking site between 28 February and 8 March.

He was arrested in the wake of a major police operation to crack down on people who had been posting hate-filled comments related to Rangers and Celtic following their volatile Scottish Cup replay on 2 March.

Sheriff Bill Totten told Birrell, from Dalmarnock, Glasgow, that the courts had to send “a clear message to deter others who might be tempted to behave in this way”.

One of the comments, posted a day before the Old Firm clash, read: “Hope they all die. Simple. Catholic scumbags ha ha.”

Two days after the match, which triggered a Scottish Government crackdown against football-related disorder, Birrell wrote: “Proud to hate Fenian tattie farmers.”

Birrell was also handed a five-year football banning order at Glasgow Sheriff Court for writing the comments on a Facebook page titled “Neil Lennon Should Be Banned”.

His lawyer, Iain McLennan, told the sheriff that Birrell had accepted what he had done, but struggles to understand the severity of his actions.

He said: “He finds it difficult just to comprehend how serious what he did was. But he does accept that what he did was wrong and gratuitously offensive.”

The sheriff told Birrell he wanted to “send a clear message that the right-thinking people of Glasgow and Scotland will not allow any behaviour of this nature, or allow any place in our society for hate crimes”.

He said: “The use of modern communications to spread or support abuse, or target groups of people because of their ethnic or racial background, has no place in our modern society and has no place in genuine support for any football club.”

Under the Scottish Government’s new anti-sectarianism legislation, anyone posting hate-filled messages online faces being jailed for up to five years.

No wonder he struggles to understand the severity of his actions. He's not the only one.

The guy should appeal this all the way to the European Court of Human Rights. They're a bunch of utopian do-gooders, but even they might see this as an infringement on free speech too far.

It's also characteristic of third-world countries that the law is not enforced impartially. The judges and police do whatever the government tells them to do, and target whoever the government tells them to target, not as a result of changes in the law of the land but through informal channels of communication and pressure exerted from on high. That is exactly what is going on here too. Why are we suddenly seeing this spate of prosecutions for religiously-motivated hate crimes? Is it because there are more of them? No. Is it because a new law has been passed, criminalising things that weren't criminal before? No. It is because the SNP government overreacted to a football match and started pressuring police forces to carry out prosecutions. The police are supposed to be independent of the government. They are there to enforce the law impartially. But in this case they just knuckle under and do what the gubmint tells them to do - just like in a third-world country.

Muslim Gang Culture in Glasgow

BOUNDING down Forth Street on the southside of Glasgow, 15-year-old Atif is waving his arms around as he talks about his experience of gang fighting.

“I remember when we were playing football at the Holyrood pitches and there was this big riot, there were about 50 people,” he says, barely gasping for air in between sentences. “It was crazy, we had just come out of football, and hammers and knives were getting thrown everywhere.”

Brawling mostly happens on “special occasions”, he says, such as bonfire night, or Eid, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, or at the Glasgow multicultural festival, Mela.

“Fighting is fun,” he says with a huge grin. You get pumped up, you get really into it ... but you regret it after.”

His friend nods in agreement but claims Shields – the Pollokshields neighbourhood in Glasgow which has a large Asian population – isn’t that “scary”, he says.

Walking ahead of the pair are Amir and Humza.

It is an unseasonably warm October evening and Albert Drive, the heart of Pollokshields, is littered with people popping in and out of the shops and cars pumping out rap music.

The lads are all on the cusp of turning 16. They are all in fourth year at different Glasgow schools, and they are all young Asian Muslims living in Glasgow’s ethnically diverse southside.

Some come from families with criminal connections, some are from one-parent families. One is a carer for his disabled mother. These are young men on the brink of losing themselves to gang culture. Tonight, they are with their youth workers – men who are attempting to make sure these teenagers don’t take the wrong path as so many of their peers are now doing.

At the moment, all they seem to care about is playing football, going to the gym and smoking cannabis. But they risk falling into serious criminality.

Atif’s uncle, who is 19, recently spent time in Polmont Young Offenders Institute. Atif says he was charged once but the case was dropped. He refuses to say what the charge was, however.

His friend, Rashid, cites the eternal woe of the teenager for the attraction to petty crime: “There’s just not enough to do here.”

Atif agrees: “Everyone smokes hash because there’s nothing to do.”

The teenagers belong to the Youth Community Support Agency (YCSA). Dozens of teens throughout the community attend every day. There are around 20 workers and volunteers for the Pollokshields charity, which is currently facing worrying funding cuts. Youth workers say the mid to late-teens are a tightrope walk for young Asian men – and they can easily fall into gang culture.

Billy Halliday, 49, a young person’s support worker who has been with YCSA for almost two years, is sitting in the “quiet room” of the striking A-listed building, which was formerly a Masonic lodge and a base for the Seamen’s Mission.

A swirling stone dragon pops out of the wall above the toilets and erotic nude pictures of mermaids are painted over wall tiles.

Given that the clientele of the organisation is predominantly Muslim, the mermaid’s modesty is covered by giant posters.

“We have to recognise different cultures and respect them,” he says.

Halliday calls the young people “role models” and says the work the YCSA does in the area is vital.

Many young people, he says “aren’t actually in gangs ... but they adopt the gang of the area as a badge”.

He says: “Young people who are doing well at school and who have got real good prospects see themselves as a Shielder [Pollokshields gang] or a Gabba [Govanhill gang] because they stay in that area.

“But as they get older, if no-one’s tackling that identity and if there’s no activities for them to do, then the older people will draw them into the activities.

“We get them to see that they can make their own decisions and take responsibility for their own actions.”

The overwhelming feeling from the teenagers is that they are perceived negatively. “I was coming back from my mate’s and two police officers pulled me over to ask me what I was doing and then searched me,” says Humza.

“Everyone thinks Pollokshields is a bad area,” adds Rashid, who is from the area but now lives in nearby Govanhill. “But it’s just a stereotype.

“People see a group of people and they think, ‘it’s obviously a gang’ but it’s just a bunch of friends.”

The YCSA is clearly a lifeline for them. “We like coming here because it gives us opportunities to get a job,” says Rashid.

“I was charged once. If I didn’t come here it would just keep happening,” Atif adds. “It keeps us off the streets.”

Hanzala 'Two Jobs' Malik

Labour's Muslim MSP appointee Hanzala Malik is refusing to give up his job as a Glasgow councillor. The man obviously weighs and eats as much as two normal men. Maybe he needs the two salaries. All that food doesn't come cheap.

A DOUBLE-JOBBING Labour MSP has been accused of treating voters “with contempt” for not standing down as a councillor despite a by-election taking place in his ward.

Hanzala Malik, who became a Glasgow list MSP in May, is refusing to quit his £16,234-a-year post as a councillor for Hillhead.

The death of SNP councillor George Roberts means there will be a by-election in Hillhead, which has four councillors in November.

Anxious for a double win, the SNP are putting pressure on Mr Malik, who also earns £57,521 as an MSP, to stand down. Because of the proportional voting system, there would be no extra cost to taxpayers in filling two vacancies instead of one – the votes would simply be counted in a different way.

But Mr Malik, 54, who in 2007 urged an SNP MSP to give up his “inappropriate” second job as a Glasgow city councillor, says he has a “moral duty” to stay until his term ends in 2012.

SNP whip Councillor Graeme Hendry said: “If the rumours are true that Hanzala Malik is refusing to stand down then he is treating the people of Hillhead with contempt.”

Celtic Player Scott Brown Photographed With SDL Members

The Edinburgh Evening News has a story about Celtic player Scott Brown being photographed with members of the Scottish Defence League (SDL), which the newspaper absurdly refers to as a "fascist group".

CELTIC FC have today vowed to take action to have a photo, which appears to show their captain Scott Brown posing alongside supporters of the far-right Scottish Defence League (SDL), removed from the internet.

Brown, a former Hibs star, was said to be horrified after the picture of him posing with the men - some apparently wearing clothing featuring SDL logos - was posted on an SDL Facebook page.

A comment left under the photo by Graham "SDL" Walker, who appears to have uploaded the snap, reads: "scot brown new menber of the sdl(sic]".

Mr Walker's own Facebook profile page shows two men grasping a Saltire bearing the words "Edinburgh SDL".

Today a spokesman for Celtic said Brown, 26, was "very concerned and disappointed" and said the club would seek to have the offending picture, which was uploaded to Facebook in February this year, removed.

He said the Scotland international had no way of knowing the political views of the group when the picture was taken.

"Anyone can see that Scott Brown simply has been asked to have a photograph taken with people who he does not know.

"It's nonsense to think that Scott Brown should be aware of the political views of everybody who he has had his photograph taken with.

"For anyone to think he would endorse these views is simply ridiculous.

"The club will be taking steps to see what can be done in terms of having the picture removed."

The SDL - whose members describe themselves as "the infidels" - claim to be against the "Islamification" of the UK.

...No-one from the SDL could be contacted for comment today.

How absurd is it that they are threatening to take legal action to prevent publication of a photo that the man clearly willingly posed for?

As the video shows, Scott Brown has a track record of standing up to aggressive Muslims, so it might have been thought that he would be sympathetic to the SDL. Apparently not.

The Scotsman's Naivety About 'the Muslim Community'

One of the most unhealthy expressions of Scottish nationalism is the belief that Muslims here are somehow different from Muslims anywhere else. "We got the good Muslims," the thinking seems to be, or somehow the natural goodness of the Scots rubbed off on the Muslims and made them good too. There is a good example of this kind of naivety today in the Scotsman in an editorial about faith schools:

A problem no-one dares mention might be fears Muslim schools could become dominated by extreme Islamists. Such fears are nonsense as the Muslim community in Scotland wholeheartedly rejects religious extremism. If there were to be faith schools, Muslims have as much right as any group to run them.

To anyone with above-average knowledge of the history and contemporary reality of Islam, this kind of naivety is enough to bring tears to the eyes.

The truth is simple: Muslims are Muslims. Their behaviour is remarkably consistent across the world. The primary determinant of their behaviour is a single variable: how many Muslims there are in a given area in relation to the non-Muslims. As Muslim numbers increase, so does their aggressiveness. If Muslims in Scotland seem less aggressive than Muslims elsewhere, then, it is because there are fewer of them.

The Scotsman editorialist seems to have forgotten that two Muslim schools in Scotland were already shut down after severely critical inspection reports. One of these was the Iqra academy in Glasgow. The final inspection report before it was shut down can be read online here. The extracts below show clearly that the Islamic ethos had a negative impact on the education of the children. Girls were discriminated against, given a different curriculum from the boys. Inappropriate physical punishment was used. There was an emphasis on mindless rote learning of the Koran and languages that have no relevance to life in modern Europe, Arabic and Urdu. There was no proper instruction in physical education and pupils were largely shut off from the world.

In interviews, pupils raised issues which gave the inspection team cause for serious concern about their welfare. Most girls said that they did not enjoy being at the school. Most of the girls said that they had been bullied and none thought that they were treated fairly in school.

...The school had no policy for equal opportunities or for race equality, although it had aims in those areas. There was a lack of fairness in how the girls were treated. It was not only apparent in issues of ethos, but also in the more limited curriculum offered to girls.

...Child protection allegations of the use of corporal punishment and inappropriate sanctions by some staff were brought to the attention of the inspection team, who reported them to the appropriate agency.

...Morale amongst pupils was variable and was particularly poor amongst the girls. They were very unhappy, and stated that the staff did not listen to them and that they had no appropriate avenues for their complaints to be heard.

...The approach to the pastoral care of the girls was unsatisfactory. The girls were dealt with in a negative manner. Such an issue is a serious concern for the well-being of the girls.

...The school was not promoting a healthy lifestyle. Pupils were expected to stay inside the school buildings for significant amounts of time. Girls were not allowed out of the school buildings during the school day, and boarders were only allowed to leave the school premises for a short period at weekends. The girls only did yoga exercises for physical education. Overall, pupils were not being provided with sufficient opportunities to take exercise.

...The school gave a specific focus to Islamic education and related religious observance. All pupils were involved in daily prayers. Boarders were addressed at evening prayers about issues of moral and religious significance.

...There was a lack of opportunities for personal and social development. Opportunities for pupils to develop citizenship in the context of the twenty-first century, and to prepare themselves as British Muslims living in a culturally diverse society, were very limited. At the time of the inspection, pupils were not being given opportunity to mix socially with the community or with pupils from other schools. There were no extra-curricular activities.

..Between the two phases of the inspection the school decided to broaden the curriculum for boys, but not for girls, by introducing ICT and religious studies. PE was also added to the boys’ curriculum.

...The Islamic studies curriculum was similar to the curriculum which the teachers had themselves experienced at various institutions in England and overseas. It provided memorisation of the Quran and the first year of an Alim course for boys, a traditional six-year course preparing boys to lead prayers in the Islamic community. Understanding of the Quran would only be taught from year three upwards. Pupils learned Urdu and Arabic. This approach was in keeping with the school’s view of a traditional experience for boys. The Islamic curriculum for girls was also stated to be a traditional experience. While some of the texts were common for boys and girls, some of the girls’ material was less demanding, and their course was planned to be shorter. That unequal provision was contrary to the school’s declared aims.


...Overall, the secondary and boarding education provided by Iqra Academy was unsatisfactory. The welfare of the school’s pupils was not being suitably safeguarded. The learning and teaching provided was of a very poor quality. The ethos was unsatisfactory. The school was not meeting its stated aims. Management was ineffective.

Muslim Councillor Charged with Assaulting his Wife

LABOUR’S problems in Glasgow have mounted after a party councillor was bailed after being charged with assaulting his wife.

Shaukat Butt MBE, who represents the Govan ward, appeared in court on Friday after he was arrested and detained in custody.

The Labour Party said it would suspend him.

The former JP has been a councillor since 1995 and is a member of various city bodies.

Butt’s political future is now in doubt following his arrest for alleged assault.

The 69-year-old was released on standard bail after appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, and the pleading trial has been set for October.

Butt has been ill recently, and it is not known if he wanted to stand in May’s local elections. His suspension means he cannot stand for Labour. As vice-chair of Glasgow Community and Safety Services, Butt said last year: “Violence and crime can have a devastating impact on our communities.”

A spokesman for Scottish Labour said: “This man will be suspended from the Labour Party until the outcome is known and we take these allegations exceptionally seriously.”

Butt said he had “no comment” to make.

SNP Foreign Aid Recipient Maldives Intensifies Religious Repression

I've written before about how the SNP is giving foreign aid to the Maldives (see here, here and here) and made a specific commitment to this in their manifesto. The Maldives was already ranked one of the most religously repressive Islamic regimes in the world. Now the repression is going to intensify a bit further.

MALE, September 17 (HNS) – President’s Office has gazetted the controversial Religious Unity Regulation, declaring it an offence to preach a religion except Islam in the Maldives.

The 12-clause regulation makes it mandatory for preachers of Islam, both locals and foreigners, to have a first degree in a field of Islamic education from a ministry-approved college, university or centre.

...The regulation also prohibits comments of hatred towards people of other religions, spreading a religion other than Islam and using an object that resembles a sign of a religion other than Islam.

A person who violates the regulation will be sentenced to 2-5 years in prison, banishment or house arrest.

Glasgow Labour Party Reorganised by Brodie the Beagle

The Herald today has some interesting information about civil strife within the Glasgow Labour party:

The bid to bring new talent into the City Chambers, has prompted a fierce backlash among those de-selected, and there are now calls for a critical meeting of the city party next week to be postponed.

There are also questions about the credibility of a key official behind the process, procedures secretary Jamie Mallan, who runs a website pretending to be a dog. The regular online babytalk on his “Brodie the Beagle” Facebook page has raised eyebrows among activists, who believe Mr Mallan is a potential embarrassment to the party.

So Jamie Mallan is "the brains" behind the reorganisation. Let's take a look at his website to gain an impression of his intellect and moral character. Here are a few representative extracts:

Totalitarian Impulse Within the Scottish Government

In response to criticism of the proposed law on bigotry, the Scottish government revealed its totalitarian impulses.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman last night defended the legislation.

She said: "Racism, bigotry and sectarianism have no place in Scotland, and those who perpetrate such behaviour will be punished through the full force of the law. These new laws will send out a clear message that there is no place for bigots in a modern-day Scotland.

"If approved, anyone who peddles sectarian hatred - in any football stadium in Scotland, on the way to or from a game, or hiding behind a computer screen - could now face up to five years in jail."

The phrase "have no place in Scotland" is uniquely expressive of the totalitarian impulse that lies behind this and much other do-gooder legislation. It's not that the Scottish government is alone in this. Many western governments now use similar language routinely and rarely find themselves challenged for it. But they should be.

With the sole exception of immigration policy and the problems that result from it, the idea that a government should decide what does or doesn't have a place in the country is fundamentally sinister. It is not the role of a government to attempt to alter the moral sensibility of its people.

If there are racists in Scotland, then racism has its place in Scotland. If there are morris dancers in Scotland, then morris dancing has its place in Scotland. If there are people who worship Adolf Hitler as some kind of demonic god in Scotland, then Hitler worship has its place in Scotland. It is the people who should decide what does or doesn't have a place in Scotland, not the government.

The notion of regulating a state of mind is also creepily totalitarian. To attempt to do this, or even to talk as if you were doing this, is to create actual or apparent thought crimes. All that a government can legitimately do is prohibit actions, not states of mind. Even if the racist action of denying someone a job on racist grounds, say, is made illegal, racism itself is not. Extending the rhetoric from the action to the state of mind delegitimises and dehumanises a section of the Scottish population. Of course this is the intent. But it is an anti-democratic, totalitarian intent.

SDL Protest Passes Without Incident

A protest by a far-right group in Edinburgh has ended without incident, police have confirmed.

The Scottish Defence League (SDL) staged a static protest on Saturday after their request to march through the city was turned down by the council.

A counter-rally also took place with groups from across Scotland coming together to under the banner of United Against Fascism (UAF).

The UAF rally, which began at The Mound from 11am, was followed by a march through the city centre involving over 250 participants. Meanwhile, approximately 150 SDL activists gathered for their demonstration at the bottom of Waterloo Place.

Lothian and Borders Police said there was a "substantial" police presence in the city centre, with officers deployed along the route of the UAF march.

The force said that no arrests had been made during the day.

Assistant Chief Constable Iain Livingstone, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We are satisfied with the conduct of the vast majority of those who visited Edinburgh for their respective demonstrations.

"The day passed without significant incident and allowed local residents and businesses to go about their day with minimum disruption.

ACC Livingstone went on to thanks the Edinburgh public for their patience and support throughout the event.

He said: "Edinburgh remains a hub for various demonstrations to take place and Lothian and Borders Police have a wealth of experience in facilitating both planned and spontaneous gatherings."

Lothian and Borders Police was supported by colleagues from Strathclyde, Tayside, Fife and Central forces for the operation.

A previous SDL march held in Edinburgh in February 2010 saw five people arrested.

Preparations for the SDL Demo Today

Note the bias in this news clip. They sympathetically interview a member of the UAF (an organisation that exists for no other purpose than to use violence and intimidation against political opponents) but no member of the SDL.

The reporter also describes the SDL (or EDL) as "unashamedly anti-Muslim". This is incorrect. Being anti-Islam is not the same thing as being anti-Muslim. Islam is an ideology. Muslims are people. In any case, the EDL at least (I would assume the SDL follow them in this) insists that it is opposed only to Islamic extremism, not Islam in general.

I disagree with them in this. I think, in its division of the world into two classes of people to whom differential moral standards are applied, Islam is an inherently extreme, conflict-generating ideology. There is no other major ethical system in the world that violates the Golden Rule (do as you would be done by), as Islam does. It's time we started acknowledging the problematical nature of Islam, rather than being cowed by political correctness into uttering only half truths about it.

The All-Embracing Muslim Victimhood Narrative

Since the time of Muhammad, Muslims have justified their aggressions against others by cultivating a baroque victimhood narrative. At times, even the refusal of a group of 'infidels' to accept Islam has been deemed to constitute an 'aggression' against the Ummah, one that justified 'retaliation'. There seems to be nothing that cannot be woven into this narrative of victimhood. It is all-embracing. And, increasingly, as has historically been the case under conditions of dhimmitude, the non-Muslims (at least the Establishment minions) are internalising the Muslim worldview. Here is a perfect example from the Scotsman. The author claims that Muslims were among the principal victims of the September 11th attacks. So even when Muslims murder thousands of infidels in religiously motivated jihad attacks, it is the Muslims who are the victims!

The two elements of Scottish society to be hardest hit by the consequences of al-Qaeda's plot were the armed forces and the Muslim community: one would lose their lives and limbs in an attempt to defeat the group and their allies in Afghanistan; the other would dwell under a cloud of suspicion and prejudice and endure a rise in racist abuse and violence.

"A decade after 9/11, many Muslims in Scotland feel under siege," says Aamer Anwar, a solicitor and human rights activist. "Since the beginning of the 'war on terror' in 2001, the state offered those who follow Islam a choice – either you can be 'good Muslims' and accept Britain's foreign policy in the Middle East and beyond, or, be cast as the 'enemy within' and subjected to endless persecution."

People from Across Britain Coming to SDL Demo in Edinburgh on Saturday

Look at the extraordinary bias in this article: "bringing fascists from the west of Scotland". Those are the words of the journalist writing the article, not a quote from a UAF member. There is not even a pretence of impartiality.

Assistant Chief Constable Iain Livingstone, who will be in command of the police operation, said there would be a strong police presence in the city centre as both groups assemble.

His comments came as it emerged the Scottish Defence League's rally had also attracted members of an English group called North West Infidels, whose opponents say they are even more right-wing than the English Defence League.

Right-wing protesters are planning to travel from across England and Wales to attend Saturday's SDL march. A Facebook page set up for the event shows members planning journeys from as far afield as London and Clacton in Essex. A coach is due to travel from Teeside, with individual protesters coming from places such as Macclesfield and Deeside in North Wales.

Another coach is also understood to be bringing fascists from the west of Scotland.

The event page says the group plans to gather between 1pm and 4pm, but does not reveal where, although Regent Road is thought to be the most likely site.

The same people who set up the page have also set up a second site on Facebook encouraging members of the North West Infidels to attend.

Spokesman for counter- protest group United Against Fascism, Luke Henderson, said of the group: "A lot of them appear to be coming up to Edinburgh, unfortunately, and they seem to have split from the EDL, saying that they're too moderate.

"It looks like the SDL are coming from across Scotland and the north of England and we're asking the people of Edinburgh to come out and say no to their race hate."

United Against Fascism plans to counter the SDL protest with two separate rallies on Saturday, including speeches from Malcolm Chisholm, MSP and Dave Moxham of the STUC.

In February last year more than 2000 people joined an anti-fascist march through the city when the SDL attempted to protest, but were instead penned in at Jenny Ha's pub in the Royal Mile.

The anti-fascist protesters plan to gather at 11am on The Mound on Saturday for their first rally, and then be escorted by police to a second event at around noon by the Wellington Statue at the east end of Princes Street.

Assistant Chief Constable Livingstone said police were experienced in dealing with both planned and spontaneous events in the city centre.

"In February of last year, we faced a similar situation and policed that occasion very effectively with only minor disruption to the city and a handful of arrests," he said.

"Looking to Saturday, I would like to reassure the people of Edinburgh and visitors to the city that they can go about their business as usual.

"We have followed closely the applications made to City of Edinburgh Council by both SDL and UAF. To anyone involved in organising demonstrations, we look for full co-operation with the police and have no issue with peaceful protest.

"However we will take a very firm line with people who seek to become involved in disorder. Our planning has been detailed, we are well prepared and we will have a strong police presence in the city centre."

Muslim Factions Strengthening Their Hand Within Glasgow Politics

There is a report in the Herald today that describes the weeding out of various Labour councillors in Glasgow. Almost half of the current crop will not be picked for re-election. You have to marvel at the sheer Stalinism of this. Theirs is a political culture so corrupt, so free of ordinary democratic restraints, that change must come about not through the judgement of the electorate or the opinion of local party members, but the arrival of the Man from Moscow (or in this case London).

THE unprecedented sacking by Labour of almost 20 of its councillors on Scotland’s largest local authority will see around half the current administration stand down before next May’s election.

Senior figures within Glasgow City Council’s Labour group have told of colleagues being visibly upset as more have found out the party’s machinery has effectively called a halt to their political careers.

...The cull has been driven by London, with input from some local key players.

One party source said: “The guy from London, Ken Clark, has done this across the London boroughs and knows all the backgrounds of those being interviewed. If he’s in your interview, it’s bad. They’ve been savage and in all my years in politics I’ve never known anything as brutal.”

The Herald also has some indications of who the replacements will be. Several are allied with the Mohammedan faction.

But names are also emerging of potential replacements, including former MSPs Frank McAveety and Bill Butler, ex-councillor Chris Kelly, James Adams, an RNIB campaigns manager who works with Anas Sarwar, Soryia Siddique, a lecturer at Cardonald College, and Aileen McKenzie, another ally of the Sarwar dynasty.

The SNP, of course, is no better and probably much worse. With several figures formerly prominent within the Glasgow SNP resigning recently, it looks as though the Muslim faction, with Nicola Sturgeon as its dhimmi figurehead, has fought and won a civil war within the ranks of the local party.

SNP hopes of winning Glasgow in next year’s council elections have suffered a further setback with the resignation of another party official amid bitter infighting over strategy.

Ari Mack quit as convener of the SNP’s Glasgow Regional Association (GRA).

His departure follows that of GRA Secretary Shona McAlpine and GRA vice-convenor Norman MacLeod in recent weeks, after a series of internal rows about how many candidates to field next May.

This seems innocent enough. Then we learn what the dispute is really about.

One SNP source claimed the fighting was being driven by supporters of Sturgeon, many from the Asian community, who had joined the party in the expectation of getting the chance to stand as candidates.

...A Labour source added: “The long-running feud between Nicola Sturgeon’s faction and the rest of the Glasgow SNP is bubbling up yet again. The SNP are clearly more interested in putting party interests before the people of Glasgow.”

One of the Glasgow SNP's recently departed, Shona McAlpine, dared to challenge the Muslim faction a couple of years ago after it was caught engaging in Tower-Hamlets style membership fakery.

Jahangir Hanif was asked to explain irregularities over new members signed up as he tried to win support to stand in the Holyrood elections.

The SNP members' department began asking questions after people who supposedly signed membership forms claimed to have no knowledge of joining the party.

West Scotland activist Shona McAlpine - who received the query - then demanded answers on the anomalies from Hanif, a Glasgow city councillor.

In a series of emails to Hanif, she commented: "This isn't good enough. If the media get hold of the fact we are falsly (sic) signing people up they would have a field day.
"Can you tell me if any of the others you have sent are real members or just ones you have made up?" Controversial Hanif - who was dubbed the Kalashnikov Councillor when he trained his children to fire an assault rifle during a visit to Pakistan - last night denied any wrongdoing.

He played down McAlpine's concerns, saying she had wrongly assumed he was connected to the irregularities in the membership list.

Hanif said: "She panics on every little thing. She got a whole bunch of people and assumed I had signed them up. She panicked when she got all these people.

"I didn't falsify a single form. I don't believe in doing that. I think she has panicked and mixed things up.

Muslim Paedophile Demands Compensation From Scottish Government

PAEDOPHILE Mahmood Qadri’s anti-smoking writ could end up costing Scots taxpayers up to £16million.



The pervert, jailed for seven years for abusing two young girls at the mosque where he worked, claims his “human dignity” has been infringed by passive smoking behind bars.



Papers lodged at Glasgow Sheriff Court claim he suffered “significant and prolonged physical and mental distress” after being forced to share a cell with smokers.



Qadri, 63, wants £10,000 compensation and human rights experts last night warned his test case, if successful, could lead to a flood of claims from non-smoking inmates.



There are an estimated 1600 non-smokers among Scotland’s 7800 prison population. If they are awarded similar compensation, the final bill could top £16million.



...Qadri, an ex-mosque teacher, says he made several complaints about having to share cells with smokers at prisons in Edinburgh and Dumfries but “no prompt action” was taken to resolve the issue.



His court papers claim: “At times he found it difficult to breathe.



“The smoke caused him to cough, he found it difficult to sleep and would hold his blanket over his face at night to try to avoid breathing in the smoke. The pursuer found it extremely ­uncomfortable and distressing to be subjected for such ­considerable periods of time to passive smoking.



“He suffered significant physical and mental distress due to prolonged periods of exposure to passive smoking.”



Qadri is awaiting a decision on whether he has secured legal aid before a date can be fixed for any future hearing.



The fiend was convicted three years ago of abusing his young victims during Koran lessons at Edinburgh’s Polwarth Mosque. He had been due to appear at the High Court in 2005 but headed to Pakistan claiming he was doing charity work. He was eventually caught in Germany.

As many as 500 locals in one of Mexico's poorest regions have converted to Islam.



Muslims have settled in rural Mexico and converted at least 500 locals, mostly indigenous Mayans, to Islam in the impoverished state of Chiapas. The conversions are still ongoing but began in the 1996 as Europeans arrived in the aftermath of civil conflict in the region.



CHIAPAS, MEXICO (Catholic Online) - Deep in southern Mexico, one does not expect to find Islam. Mexico is a very Catholic country although protestants, Jehovah Witnesses, and Mormons have made significant inroads there. Islam arrived in Chiapas brought by activist Europeans who came to rebuild the troubled communities.



The first arrivals came in 1996 just as the government started peace talks with the Zapatista rebels. Many locals were converted to evangelical Christianity, at the urging of missionaries from the U.S. and Europe, but Muslims quickly followed and spread a different message beside the Bible. Local converts explain that the Muslims and their families that settled in Chiapas have brought opportunities as well as faith to the people.



Among the opportunities are work--for a price. People who convert to Islam are frequently given jobs, which means a stable income. It is mostly Spanish-Muslims that have settled and established restaurants and carpentry shops, and are responsible for most of the conversions, although the sect's spiritual leader is reportedly a Muslim from Scotland.



In a popular move, the some of the Muslims have proceeded to align themselves with the Zapatistas, and echo their message of rebellion. With this, the Muslim outsiders quickly became insiders amongst the impoverished people. They have spread a message that is anti-capitalist, anti-government, and that people ought to return to the traditional life of Mohammed.



The traditional life appeals to many who say such ways are also the ways of their ancestors. While acknowledging such ways are primitive, several converts simply say they are more comfortable living in that way and that modern western practices are unnatural for them.



Many complain that evangelical Christianity does not offer enough. Wanting community, and more than just the Bible, newly arrived Muslims have satisfied the people's desires where evangelicals did little by comparison.



The indigenous Mayan people of Chiapas are ripe for conversion. They have been largely dissatisfied with their treatment at the hands of the government who they accuse of seizing land and aligning with wealthy interests at the expense of the native peoples. They claim such abuse has always been.



Associating Christianity with the establishment, and with their native religion long extinct and impractical, many are more than willing to take up the Quran and listen to a different message.



In the village of San Cristobal de las Casas, local Muslims have built a mud hut for a mosque and they gather there regularly to pray. Local Muslin immigrants have even paid to send converts on pilgrimages to Mecca.



Mexican-Muslims say they are happy with their conversions. They claim their community is close-knit and relatively free of vice. Such benefits are doubtless attractive to the poor and often troubled people of the region. For now, there are only 500 converts in the region, but with ongoing strife and a continuing influx of Muslims, those numbers are likely to change.

Alex Salmond Submits to Allah's Will in His End of Ramadan Message

On behalf of the Scottish Government, I am delighted to send my sincere and warmest wishes to Muslims across Scotland, and around the world, who are marking the end of Ramadan by celebrating Eid ul-Fitr.



Scotland's Muslims, and our many other minority ethnic and faith communities, are valued and appreciated by this Government for their contribution to our culture, society and economy.



The holy month of Ramadan encourages Muslims to reflect on the poor and hungry throughout the world and the burden they bear.



So this year's Eid will be a poignant occasion for many Muslims, as we remember those whose lives have been left devastated by the recent flooding in Pakistan.



Charity is at the heart of Ramadan, and at the close of Ramadan, Muslims give Sadaqa-Ul-Fitr, a donation that allows those who are struggling to make ends meet to also enjoy the festivities of Eid.



And, this year, Mosques throughout Scotland are collecting for aid to Pakistan. Here at the Blackhall Mosque in Edinburgh, where I am recording this message, I have been privileged and humbled to see the work that is going on to collect goods and money and to see that they are delivered to Pakistan.



The scale of suffering in Pakistan is immense and ongoing. So far, Scots have given - with typical generosity - over £3.9 million to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal and we must continue to do all we can do to help those whose homes and communities were destroyed by these floods.



The Scottish Government made £807,000 available last week to assist the Pakistani aid effort. We are in regular contact with Scottish aid agencies working in Pakistan, to monitor the situation on the ground, so that we can help to provide further assistance where and when needed.



So let me repeat my best wishes to Muslims across Scotland who will be enjoying festivities with family and friends this Eid, whilst our hearts and thoughts are also with the people of Pakistan. Eid Mubarak to everyone.

Faisal Abdul Rauf's Deceit Exposed

Yesterday the ground zero mosque imam, Faisal Abdul Rauf, implied that Sharia law could be implemented only partially, not conflicting with the country's penal code. It was pointed out on JihadWatch, however, that he had said the exact opposite in his book Islam: A Sacred Law.

And since a Shari'ah is understood as a law with God at its center, it is not possible in principle to limit the Shari'ah to some aspects of human life and leave out others.

It was good to see that the comments on the Herald were robustly critical of Rauf and his Islamic pretensions. I think people are starting to wake up to the threat of Islam. You can be sure that politicians and journalists will be the last to wake up, though.

AMERICA’S most controversial imam – the man at the centre of the storm over plans for the “Ground Zero Mosque” in New York last year – flew into Edinburgh yesterday to tell the Festival of Spirituality and Peace that greater integration between Islam and the West depends on the incorporation of Sharia law into the legal systems of the UK and the United States as well as Muslims adopting the culture of their host countries.



Many see Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf as an Islamic moderate even though he has been vilified in the US press as an apologist for radical Muslims. In an interview with the Sunday Herald, Rauf said he believes the world is in the grip of a “dangerous myth” and “self-fulfilling prophecy” that “Islam and the West are at war. But the real battleground is not between Islam and the West, but between the wise, fair-minded people of all faith traditions and the extremists.”



Although he is a pro-US imam who has argued that America is the embodiment of Islam’s ideal society, Rauf became a hate figure in the US over the so-called Ground Zero Mosque. The plan offended relatives of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and led to a US pastor proposing a “Burn a Koran day”.



Rauf says that when the project – a community centre containing a mosque – was announced on the front page of the New York Times [in December 2009] there was no reaction. But six months later, it was picked up by conservatives like Sarah Palin and became one of the most divisive subjects in US society. Rauf later said: “If I had known this would happen, cause this kind of pain, I wouldn’t have done it.”



Was he naïve? “What surprised me is that I’ve been in the United States for 46 years and I think of it as having a very strong concept of separation of church and society, and yet a house of worship was used in a political campaign,” Rauf said.



But most of his work is about dousing fires rather than fanning them. He often talks about the interweaving of Muslim and Western culture. Multi-culturalism, he believes, is the way forward, and the state we are globally shifting towards. America, he points out, has been more successful at this than Europe.



It is, he says, a paradigm because it is “structurally multi-cultural”. As he puts it: “Americans are predominantly hyphenated. They are Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans and so on. So there is a recognition and celebration of variety. That’s a very important factor in creating a space for Muslims to be integrated.” He notes that a greater percentage of Muslims in America are wealthy and highly educated and “those who are better off and educated have an easier time integrating”.



An essential element of this interweaving of cultures, he says, will have to be the incorporation of Sharia law into the legal systems of Europe and the US. In this, he is in agreement with the Archbishop of Canterbury who said that the adoption of some aspects of Sharia law “seems to be unavoidable”.



Rauf points out that “the only truly clashing area is the penal code, and no Muslim has the intention of introducing that to America. The penal code is the area that people in the Western world are worried about – but these are things that aren’t even observed today in most of the Muslim world. Apart from the Taliban and a few places like that, where do you see this happening?”.



In the UK, he says, we need to recognise that the radicalisation of Muslim youth is not a problem of religion. “You have to consider how we would approach it if these people were not Muslims, but were Christian, for instance. The source of the problem is not religion, but an economic one.”



Another myth which Rauf tries to counter is the idea that Islam is at odds with Western concepts of gender equality. “Look around the world, and you see six or seven predominantly Muslim countries that have had heads of governments and heads of state who were women. Glass ceilings have already been broken for many countries in the Muslim world.”



The rise of the extreme right in Europe is something he perceives as a “reaction of fear to a threat of the loss of identity”. He says: “What it means to be Dutch, or what it meant to be British, in terms of ethnicity or language, is undergoing a shift.” The tensions this provokes have to be “addressed by both the host community and the immigrant community ... We need to develop a local Muslim culture. Dutch Muslims have to become increasingly Dutch. The same for British Muslims. We should dress like the people of our country.”



His emphasis is always on what binds, not divides. “I’ve been around and seen a lot,” says the Kuwait-born Imam, who grew up in England. “The fact is that the Western world and Muslim world are very enmeshed ... To me those mutual interests are very bonding.”



Rauf supported the decision by Edinburgh City Council to ban the far-right Scottish Defence League from marching on the eve of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 amid safety fears.



He also supported the Scottish Government’s decision to release the Lockerbie bomber.



Imam Feisal is to meet Glasgow MSP Humza Yousaf, who has been vocal on Muslim issues. He will hold a second talk in Glasgow on Wednesday, and will receive a peace award from the Festival, the city of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Interfaith Association and the Conference of Edinburgh’s Religious Leaders.

He was invited to speak at the Festival of Spirituality and Peace by Edinburgh University's Prince Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam.



His visit comes almost a fortnight ahead of the 10th anniversary of the September 11 2001 attacks, and six days after Edinburgh City Council turned down an application from the Scottish Defence League to march on September 10 amid public safety fears.



Speaking after the talk, Imam Feisal said: "I don't think we should allow, in our communities, space for those who wish to abridge the freedoms of another person on the basis of their religion, race, language or gender. I think we have to combat those tendencies."



He added: "I do believe that freedoms are not absolute. A famous American judge said: 'Freedom of speech does not give you the right to shout fire in a crowded theatre'. The outcome will result in innocent people being made victims. So the freedom comes with a responsibility."



Imam Feisal added that he supported the Scottish Government's decision to release Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan Muslim who is the only man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, but he would have been equally supportive if they had decided to keep him in prison.



He said: "I am not a Scotsman so I don't have the jurisdiction to comment, but if the government of Scotland deem that it is in its best interests to do something then it is up to them, but I would have supported their decision either way."



Imam Feisal is also due to meet Glasgow MSP Humza Yousaf, who has been vocal on Muslim issues in Scotland since his election to the Scottish Parliament in May.

NEARLY 8000 children from countries across the world have enrolled in Glasgow schools in the past five years, according to new figures.



The figures are revealed as the local authority considers proposals to shut a pioneering language support unit in the city.



Official statistics from Glasgow City Council show the highest number of new pupils are Polish followed by Slovakians, Pakistanis, Indians and Nigerians.



Significant numbers have also arrived from Somalia, Malaysia, Romania, Iraq and the Congo.



The number of new arrivals – a total of 7405 since 2005 – are recorded in a review of the way pupils who speak little or no English are supported in Glasgow schools.



The local authority is currently considering the closure of a pioneering support unit located in Shawlands Academy, on the south side of the city.



Officials argue closing the unit will have no impact on educational quality because staff will be retained and used to support pupils in their own schools – possibly in smaller specialist units.



However, critics believe a single dedicated unit is the best way to educate pupils who have little or no English – termed EAL (English as an Additional Language).



The review includes the results of a consultation exercise on the future of the unit which found the vast majority of respondents opposed its closure.



Of the responses received, 40 opposed the proposals and just one agreed with them.



Despite this, in a report to the council’s children and families policy development committee, Maureen McKenna backed the proposed changes.



She pointed to evidence from a 1986 report by the Commission for Racial Equality which said placing EAL pupils in separate units amounted to indirect discrimination.



“From as early as 1998, educationalists ... were putting forward the position that EAL learners should not be placed into separate units,” she added.



“Immersion, where the learner is placed in an English language rich environment, has been shown to be by far the most effective way for a second language to be acquired.”



Ms McKenna goes on to accept that some of the needs of EAL learners are not currently being met. To try to combat this, she said the council had been training mainstream teachers, including probationers, to meet their needs.



She concludes: “The research shows there is little evidence for a separate base where newly-arrived children should go to acquire English before being returned to their local secondary school.”



Jean McFadden, the council’s executive member for education, said: “The council has witnessed a shift in the make-up of young people with EAL coming to Glasgow over the last few years.



“This is largely due to the reduction in asylum seeker families arriving in the city and the increase in the number of Eastern European families.



“The proposals being discussed would result in a more flexible service more in tune with the current needs of Glasgow’s young people.



“We remain committed to supporting the needs of all children and young people with EAL despite the financial challenges facing all councils.”



Glasgow has more than 130 EAL teachers. Around a 100 are based in schools providing direct support to mainstream teachers and learners, the report states.
